When possible, Los Niños directs our purchases to merchants and craftsmen in the Colonia Vincente Guerrero area to keep the money circulating through the neighborhood. Local jobs and modest profits provide an indirect, although very important, benefit to the school’s welfare.
A committee of teachers and parents are responsible for providing prioritized lists of the materials and supplies most urgently needed. Teachers decide the type of assistance (if any) each specific child may require. A Los Niños committee then meets to determine how we may help them realize their goals.
We recognize you may wish to direct your contribution to a specific need and have listed several important categories below. When donation amounts are suggested, they are usually local, retail prices and do not reflect discounts we may be able to negotiate for volume purchases. Donation amounts to other categories are left to your kind discretion. (USD=United States dollars. PayPal, our credit card partner, will convert Canadian donations to USD.)
- General Fund. Your generous donation will be applied to most urgent current need of
the school. Matching grants may to available to double the value of your contribution.
- Sponsor a child. Outfit a student for a year with a school uniform, shoes, backpack,
and class supplies with a donation of $62.USD.
- School uniforms. Mexico requires students to wear school uniforms, an excellent
idea that helps blur the economic differences between children. Fewer than a quarter of Nueva Creacion kids can afford them. You can provide a white shirt/blouse and blue pants/skirt uniform, gym shorts/shirt and 3 pair of socks for $ 29.USD per student.
- School shoes. Most of these children can only afford plastic flip-flops; some have
no shoes at all. Local folks have already funded 20 pairs. You can donate good quality school shoes for only $10.USD a pair.
- Student supplies. Spiral notebooks, pencils and sharpeners, erasers, ballpoint pens,
rulers, colored markers, school bags and other learning tools are all in woefully short supply. $23.USD will outfit a child for a school year.
- Teaching Materials. The teachers are currently trying to make do with just
blackboards, a few used books and very limited supplies. They need schoolbooks, charts, diagrams, more chalkboards, vocabulary and math flashcards, and other vital teaching tools.
- Art supplies. Construction paper, crayons, colored pens and markers, compasses,
child scissors, drawing paper, coloring books and craft kits will permit these kids to explore their creative talents.
- Athletic equipment. Recognizing the need to nourish young bodies as well as young
minds, we welcome funding for playground equipment, such as soccer balls, basketballs and nets.
- Teacher fund. The six young teachers are currently trying to educate 152 children
(this number is growing) in grades one through six. Three are paid a modest $180 a month for this demanding work. Donations to provide partial salaries for the three volunteer teachers are desperately needed.
- Building fund. In partnership with the city of Zihuatanejo, Rotary Club International
and Por Los Niños de Zihuatanejo, a fund has been established to build a safe permanent school on land donated by the city.
- SailFest/Por Los Niños. Donations to our two “sister” organizations, made via the
Los Niños website, qualify for U.S. tax deductible status.
Important Note. Should a particular “need” be over-subscribed, i.e. too many shoes or desks, we will redirect your donation to the most closely related need.
